Three generations, endless expertise.
L&J has been serving healthcare providers for nearly 40 years and across three generations. Our brokerage was started by our Nurse Risk Manager mother/grandmother, Lillian (the “L” of “L&J”).
So, we’re med mal insurance brokers who know what it feels like on the other side. We deeply understand what being a healthcare provider entails and all that goes into protecting that livelihood.
Your day is accounted for and worrying about insurance shouldn’t be on your stacked to-do list.
With decades of combined industry experience, our med mal brokers know how to put you first and find the creative coverage solutions you need.
We have far-reaching industry partners and can place everything from the straightforward to the incredibly complex.
As an independent brokerage, we work with dozens of insurance companies and are confident that we can find the right company for your needs.
First Generation – L&J was co-founded by Nurse Lillian (the “L”) and Jack (the “J”) in 1985.
Second Generation – Nurse Lillian and Jack’s son, Mike, joined in 1996. The co-founders retired in 2006.
Third Generation - Hannah, Mike’s oldest daughter, joined in 2015.
Our Team
-
Mike Karson
Mike joined L&J almost 30 years ago and, in that time, has grown the book to more than 7x its original size, helped transition the business when it came time for the co-founders to retire, and is now co-owner of the brokerage with his daughter, Hannah. Mike excels at understanding the history and perspective of healthcare providers and how to share that most effectively with insurance companies. He’s passionate about making sure healthcare providers are heard throughout the process and educated so they can make informed decisions. Mike prides himself on always operating with integrity and helping make an often-muddy process more transparent. Mike holds a BA from Chico State University and has nearly three decades of industry experience.

Hannah Karson
Hannah has been with the L&J team for nearly a decade and is proud to be a co-owner of the brokerage starting in 2023. She specializes in creating one-of-a-kind medical malpractice insurance policies for unique risks, working with healthcare providers who appreciate a more in- depth analysis of coverage options and the med mal marketplace, and putting those at ease who are nervous about their potential insurability. In addition, Hannah operates the day-to-day of the brokerage itself. She loves removing red tape, crafting creative solutions, and making insurance jargon easily digestible. Hannah holds a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, an MBA from the University of Oregon, and RPLU insurance certificates.
